Even after the storms moved out of the area, BakerRipley continued the long and complicated recovery work of restoring our Neighbors and our community. Entrepreneur Connection at BakerRipley provides education, resources, and access to capital for anyone who is an aspiring entrepreneur or has an existing business. The program offers classes, business coaching, networking events, and a host of other services to help small businesses launch, grow, and thrive.

Regency Square Home-Based Program

BakerRipley offers GED Classes that serve as a High School Equivalency (HSE) program, providing educational assistance to Neighbors without a high school diploma. Every day, we infuse the Houston region with possibility through education and access to community centers, childcare, career development, small business support and technology. We serve children and seniors, veterans and immigrants, individuals and families. Students and families set goals, students soar through the learning and achieve their ambitious goals with the support of a compassionate team of teachers.

At the end of the war when the federal government stopped day care funding, the Houston Settlement Association filled the gap by taking over operations of 20 centers in the city. Free, high-quality child care for families in Harris County, so parents may work or attend school. Following a 1945 polio scare, the Houston Settlement Association joined forces with the Houston Health Department to show health movies in Spanish every Tuesday night. The effort brough audiovisual education to hundreds of people in the neighborhood. What grew out of that meeting was the Houston Settlement Association, which later became BakerRipley. They moved forward with the foundational purpose to provide Houston’s underserved population a welcoming place for education, career and social aid so that they could build a better life.

High School Equivalency Classes

The tornado downed powerlines, overturned vehicles, and ripped roofs from businesses and homes. During the Coronavirus Pandemic, BakerRipley worked overtime to help our Neighbors prepare, recover, and adapt in order to build long-term resiliency for our region.. Ripley House also offered preventive medical screenings through a liaison with the Baylor College of Medicine, as well as lectures on diabetes, tuberculosis, and cancer. Identity verification is required for all household members, regardless of age.

The BakerRipley campuses offer numerous spaces available for rent, including a large gym/reunion hall, small and medium classrooms, and outdoor space at Alexander Park. In 1907, Alice Graham Baker hosted a meeting of twelve influential, like-minded women to address the living conditions of families in Houston’s Second Ward (today’s East End). BakerRipley’s Utility Assistance Program supports Neighbors in Harris, Brazoria and Galveston Counties with payment of their utility bills. We are able to provide this assistance thanks to funding from the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs. Quality child care in multiple regions of Texas, so parents can work. The Digital Skills program helps you access information and resources on a computer or mobile device. Your confidence and understanding of technology-based skills will set you up for success.

Houston Lighting & Power customers donated to the fund through their monthly bills, and the electric company matched those funds. By 1988, Houston Lighting & Power had generated $3.3 million for SHARE recipients.

Parents who qualified were either working, in school, or moving toward self-sufficiency. Through this program, Neighborhood Centers, Inc. administered subsidies for more than 10,000 children in more than 700 private child care facilities every day. BakerRipley’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program offers more than just language learning. It equips you with the necessary knowledge and abilities to thrive in the United States and make meaningful contributions to your community. The program caters to learners of all levels of English proficiency, from beginners to advanced. Day care was always important to the Houston Settlement Association.
